I'm often amazed at how little information small business owners have about their market sector and how they stack up against their competitors. What are the emerging trends in your market? Where is the market going? What are the major issues likely to impact your business over the next 12 months? This information can help you make decisions about your product and service development, pricing and key messages for your marketing.
Know your customer
What makes your customers tick? Who are they? What keeps them awake at night? What are their priorities right now?
If you can answer these questions, then you can steal a march on your competitors and make key decisions.

I'm not quite ready for the Miss Marple reference, but I'm certainly good at doing some good solid desk research that can help you understand trends in your market, and really get under the skin of your customers. You'd be amazed at the difference it makes.
